The grammar of openings
A window is a sentence. Where you place it, how big it is, what it frames — these are grammar, and a building can be eloquent or clumsy depending on them.
Tell me where the light enters and I will tell you how the room feels.
Three kinds of opening
We tend to speak of three: the view, the wash, and the vent. Each does one job well and the others poorly.
- The view — held, framed, still
- The wash — light without a subject
- The vent — air before image
Καλή αρχιτεκτονική είναι να ξέρεις ποιο άνοιγμα χρειάζεται ο κάθε χώρος.
